Emily Gan Week 13 - The Memory Friend

My friend said I look like him. (core memory for real)

I have always been a memory friend. A term my friend coined for us since we were always the ones taking pictures when our friend group went out. However, for me it does not stop there, when going out I always save a receipt, paper bracelet, tag, just something to help me store that night’s fun for safekeeping. I always believed in savoring what you enjoy, from food to memories. I document my time to make it last longer than what I feel in the moment. Although in the moment it might feel like forever, things do not last forever, so cherishing these bits of life to look back on is always nostalgic.

One of the main methods I have to store my memories is my Instagram spam account, where I post all the pictures I love of my friends, family, food, and fun moments. The main reason I put everything there is because my phone and other devices do not have that much backup storage and I can never back up my pictures manually before my device is archived since I always drop them and then dead. This way I can digitally journal my life and be able to share it with my closest friends. Once a season, I find myself scrolling through the depth of my spam from the start of Junior year to Sophomore year to Freshman year and I laugh and think of all the fond memories I have. Maybe in the reality, I was depressed or naive but I get a great kick giggling at how different I was.

  1. Hi Emily! I LOVE the title of this blog and the topic as well. I think I am also a "memory friend" because I am also always taking pictures or videos and trying my best to document everything whenever I am with my friends. Sometimes people criticize me and say that I should just live in the moment instead, and while this may be the better option in some cases, the majority of the time it is always better to document the moment and keep it safe forever. When I take pictures or videos, the moment becomes captured and protected forever in my camera roll. Then, later I can relive it as many times as I want as well as share it with whoever I want. Like you, I also have an Instagram spam account on which I post all of my favorite and cute moments with my friends and family. I love having that space to myself to express what I am feeling and post pictures of things and people that I care about. I loved your blog topic this week!

  2. Hi Emily! I really like your blog topic this week, with you bringing up the concept of a “memory friend,” as one that is obsessed in storing said memories through souvenirs or images. I think the concept of taking images to look at, a long time later, for later, is a really cool idea. I think my parents may be “memory” parents, as when we go traveling, they insist on taking images about every couple of seconds. Sadly, this has made me more of an “anti-memory friend,” as I personally really struggle with getting into taking pictures. For example, recently, I went to a restaurant with my parents, and as soon as we got food, I began eating it. However, they were very upset as they wanted to take photos of the food. Personally, as soon as I see food, I want to eat it. I cannot imagine how these people can bear to see food, and not eat it for around 5 minutes, watching it get cold, for the sake of commemorating it. Instead, they should eat the food immediately, and enjoy the moment. But that is simply my opinion. As always, your blog is written very well, concise, and intriguing.
