Muhammed Ali Week 9: One Trillion Lions vs The Sun

One Trillion Lions vs The Sun

A question of dominance. A question of authority. Ultimately, a question of power. This is an argument that has plagued the planet for years upon years, with good reason of course. Asking whether or not the sun has the capability to defeat 1 trillion lions is a perfectly valid inquiry, and there have been many attempts to answer it. You choose what side you’ll take.

As the late, great Mufasa from the documentary The Lion King once said, “Everything the light touches is our kingdom.” This direct attempt at colonization is a clear indication that the lions have always had a fierce contempt for the sun. For anyone questioning if the lions and the sun would even want to fight in the first place, let this answer your question.

Some say that if the lions attack at night, they would emerge victorious. This foolproof plan has inspired confidence in millions, but it presents only one problem: sleep. Lions sleep at night, so how would they be able to fight the sun at that time? It’s a dilemma that has stumped humans and lions alike. Although this course of action would lead to almost imminent victory, it’s not one many lions are willing to take (ignoring the radical lion groups who are out for the throne and meet with neighboring Hyena gangs to do so).

Some suggest that according to “science” and “math” that the sun would win because of its “volume” and “nuclear fusion” causing “immense heat.” While I do commend the sun for being its own self-sustaining energy source (an attribute that would be marginally helpful to the lions), I don’t see how people could jump to the conclusion that plasma can defeat the teeth of 1 trillion lions, especially if they are hungry.

We may never know who wins in a fight between 1 trillion lions and the sun until Elon Musk tests it for himself. Let us wait patiently for that day to come.

  4. Hi Muhammed! As America spirals into a period of uncertainty and political discourse, your blog shall stand as the foundation of novel and contemporary academia. I find tears sliding down my eyes, for they burn, and cannot fully comprehend the beauty behind this post. Just like how the eyes of the lions will burn when they see the sun. Of course, the best way to counter this obstacle will be through the use of sunglasses to protect the eyes of the lions. However, inevitably, a trillion sunglasses, as well as the administrative costs for procuring and transporting the sunglasses, shall be less than convenient. Furthermore, by the time we gather up a trillion lions and the related funds, lions may evolve to gain photosynthesis, meaning that they will no longer be hungry when fighting the sun in fist-to-fist combat, and thus may not have the motivation to even challenge the sun to a duel itself. Perhaps that is the solution. Peace, not war. I cannot help but wonder if your blog is but a metaphor for the bourgeoisie oppressing the common working man. At the same time, your usage of quotes surrounding topics such as "science" and "math" subliminally disparages such concepts, and pushes for a return from logic and rules, while embracing freedom of thought, emotions, and humanity. Perhaps your blog, while challenging the concepts of social class and ultramodern capitalism, simultaneously criticizes the embedded belief in a "dog-eat-dog world" pushed by the contemporary utilitarian. Mufasa hopes to challenge the sun, colonizing all the lands that it touches. But must the present-day lion travel on the path of colonization? Does a truly intelligent lion pursue the feuds of the past? Is he a lion, or just another animal? As intelligent lions, we must use our gift, and be better.

  5. Hey Muhammed, your blog is definitely on a unique topic, and while I would argue the sun would reign supreme, I think it is an interesting debate. I love how you used a quote from Lion King, as Mufasa is the epitome of the strength and power lions hold. You were able to cleverly connect the quote to your overall topic, and using it as evidence supporting the lions. One thing I enjoyed about your structure was how you would identify a problem or a possible question in your audience' s mind before proceeding to offer a sufficient explanation for it. The creativity you used in this post made it an engaging and interesting read which I deeply enjoyed. Your blog has a somewhat open ending which leaves room for the audience to continue and ponder on your claims, a mark of a successful piece of writing. My favorite thing about your blog was that you consistently maintained a sense of humor by referencing Elon Musk and invalidating the credentials of "math" and "science" presenting your argument. Overall, I thought your blog was really well written, and an enlightening read!

  6. Hi Muhammed! This blog was very well written, when I saw the title I was immediately hooked. It is indeed a serious question whenever 1 trillion lions can defeat the sun. Personally, I would bet on the lions because how can I resist such big cuddly cozy creatures. Plus, have you played with cats before? They are fierce attackers, striving to fight you for your shoelace or knocking things off the table to get your attention. They show no mercy. Imagine that but 100 times bigger with sharper claws and teeth. The lions will definitely win. This battle can be taken as a metaphor for many things. Like you said lions like humans can not defeat the need to be all cuddly and warm and curled up in bed. The sun like work, waits for no man but we can never defeat all our work at once even if logically it is only 10 hours of work. We have to rest or our brain wont work. Thank you for shedding light on this tragic question.

  7. Hello Muhammed, I wanted to start my comment on the unique subject matter of this topic. I cannot deny that I have not heard of it before, but seeing this in a semi-academic setting is pretty funny to say the least. I'll attempt to answer as well as I can. So here goes: An average lion is around 150 kilograms. Multiplying that by one trillion gives us 150 trillion kilograms of net lion mass. To put that into perspective, the average person consumes approximately 675 kg of food per year. With all that meat, it is possible to keep a person fed for quite a while. It can also feed the entire population of humans for around 27 years. That's pretty impressive. However, this is where I may have to disagree with you as much as it pains me to admit that the lions have a chance. The sun is 1.989 × 10^30 kilograms. Which is about 18 orders of magnitude later. If we could consume the sun like we could consume lion, we would be feasting for 3.3 x 10 ^17 years. Around 1000 times more years than it takes for the universe to finally freeze. Simply, its a size difference, and with the largest margins in recorded history. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the style of your blog and I hope you choose more of these whimsical, thought-provoking, and humorous topics in the future!

  8. Hi Muhammed,
Your blog holds a truly unique and entertaining topic that explores this comical question. It’s surprising that not many have delved into this subject of debate. I appreciate the humor administered throughout your blog, especially the clever reference to Mufasa’s quote from "The Lion King". Your use of humor adds a lighthearted touch while cleverly ties into the broader theme of dominance and authority. I admire your consideration of the lions attacking at night and the inclusion of the ensuing problem of sleep. It shows how much thought and analysis you put in and goes beyond the surface of the hypothetical question. You also incorporated some playful skepticism towards the scientific argument for the sun's victory, which adds on to the humorous tone so widely present in your blog. Your mention of Elon Musk and the anticipation for his potential test injects a modern and real-world element into this hypothetical scenario. Your cliffhanger at the end of your blog does more than just give it a modern feel and again, adds to the humorous tone in your blog.
